Kenya’s mobile money accounts rose to 95.3 m accounts in Aug 2026.

Higher is better. Higher is better because each additional account gives someone another way to send, receive and store money by phone. The latest figure, for Aug 2026, is 95.3 million accounts, up 7.9 million, or 9%, from a year earlier. Since Sep 2024 the count has climbed from a low of 79.4 million accounts to its highest point in that span, reached in the latest month.

Why it matters. At 95.3 million accounts, mobile money is a routine channel for Kenyan households to receive money from relatives and pay everyday bills. Shops and small firms can take payments from customers by phone, and the state can use the same accounts to reach people with payments. Continued growth from this level depends on new registrations, since many people already hold at least one account.
