In plain words
9.5% y/y
What it is. How fast prices are rising, compared with a year earlier. 9.5% y/y means prices are 9.5% higher than a year earlier.
Neither way is good in itself. Whether a change is welcome depends on why it happened, so read it against its own history and other countries. A lower rate still means prices are rising, only more slowly, unless it drops below zero.
Why it matters. When prices rise faster than incomes, the same money buys less.

Methodology
Consumer price index, food and non-alcoholic beverages, change on the same month a year earlier.

Source: each country's own statistics agency. South Africa, Statistics South Africa (Consumer Price Index, food and non-alcoholic beverages); Kenya, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (Consumer Price Indices and Inflation Rates, food and non-alcoholic beverages). Nigeria, Ghana and Egypt will be added once their national releases have been checked.
Updated monthly after each agency's release. Agencies revise earlier months, and the latest revision applies. National baskets and weights differ, so rates are not strictly comparable across countries. The IMF's food series is not used because it is out of date or incomplete for these countries.
