What it is. How many units of local currency it takes to buy one US dollar in South Africa.

Read it backwards. When this number goes up, the unit of local currency is weaker: each unit of local currency buys less.

Why it matters. Anything priced in US dollars costs more units of local currency when the rate climbs.

Methodology

Official rate in local currency units per US dollar, as published by the central bank.

The official rate in local currency units per US dollar, as published by each country's central bank, one value for each day the bank publishes. A higher number means the local currency buys fewer dollars. The definition differs by country, so levels and movements should not be compared across countries without checking it. South Africa: the South African Reserve Bank's weighted average of the banks' daily rates at about 10:30, in rand per dollar. Ghana: the Bank of Ghana's interbank mid rate (the average of the buying and selling rates), in cedi per dollar. The Ghana bank page shows only the latest day, so its history is collected day by day from the start of collection. No value is published for days the bank publishes none, such as weekends.

Source: South African Reserve Bank, Selected Historical Rates (rand per US dollar), and Bank of Ghana, Daily Interbank FX Rates. Official public data, credited to each bank. Collected once a day from each bank's own publication, so a day's rate normally appears the following morning. Other countries are added when their central bank offers a feed that can be collected reliably; until then they are not covered here.
