In plain words

45% of valid votes

What it is. Share of valid first-round votes won by each presidential candidate, as certified by the electoral commission.

Neither way is good in itself. Whether a change is welcome depends on why it happened, so read it against its own history and other countries.

Why it matters. A percentage puts countries of different sizes on the same footing, so it can be compared across borders and over time.

Methodology

Share of valid first-round votes won by each presidential candidate, as certified by the electoral commission.

Share of valid first-round votes won by each leading presidential candidate. Unit: % of valid votes. Each result is dated by election day.

Not an official release: each share is calculated by Strata from the votes declared by the national electoral commission, divided by the valid votes declared for the same election, and rounded to two decimal places. For 1999, when only two candidates stood, valid votes are the sum of their two declared totals. Published shares in other sources can differ slightly because they use different bases, such as votes cast.

Nigeria: 1999, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023, candidates polling at least 5% of valid votes. The 2003 and 2007 elections are not shown because published totals disagree. See the votes indicator for sources.
