In plain words

12,853,162 votes

What it is. Votes won by each presidential candidate in the first round, as certified by the electoral commission.

Neither way is good in itself. Whether a change is welcome depends on why it happened, so read it against its own history and other countries.

Why it matters. A single figure says little on its own: its direction over time and its place among other countries say more.

Working this out from the published figures…

Strata AI commentary is coming — reviewed, dated, and generated only from the figures on this page.

Methodology

Votes won by each presidential candidate in the first round, as certified by the electoral commission.

Votes won by each leading presidential candidate in the first round, as declared by the national electoral commission. Unit: votes. Each result is dated by election day.

Nigeria: figures are those declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 1999, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023 presidential elections, as reported by the outlet or compilation named in each source line. Only candidates who polled at least 5% of valid votes are shown. INEC's own result sheets have not been separately reviewed.

The 2003 and 2007 elections are not shown: published totals disagree, and INEC has said it holds no full official result for 2007. Several of these elections were disputed in court and by observers. Results are changed only if the commission revises them.
