In plain words
5 births per woman
What it is. The fertility rate adds up the birth rates of women at each age in a single year, which gives the number of children one imagined woman would have over her lifetime. It describes a snapshot of current behaviour, so it moves when women delay or bring forward births, even if completed family size ends up the same. Total births also depend on how many women are of childbearing age, which the rate leaves out.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher rate means a faster growing and younger population, and a lower rate means slower growth and smaller cohorts of children. Which of these suits a country depends on its goals, so the measure carries no good or bad direction. Angola's latest figure is 5 births per woman in 2024, down from 5.1 births per woman a year earlier, a fall of 1.5%. Since 2015 the rate has ranged from a high of 5.8 births per woman in 2015 to the current level, which is the lowest in that span.
Why it matters. At this level families are large and the population of children keeps growing, so households spend a big share of their budgets on feeding and schooling them. The state has to add classrooms, clinics and teachers each year to keep pace. Firms can count on a young workforce entering the labour market, though jobs must grow fast enough to absorb it.
