In plain words
24.1 m people
What it is. Population is the estimated number of people living in Burkina Faso at the middle of the year, counting residents of every age. Estimates of this kind usually rest on census results carried forward with assumed birth, death and migration rates, so they are only as good as the last census and those assumptions. The total says nothing about age, location or living standards.
Neither way is good in itself. Neither a rising nor a falling population is good in itself. Growth can mean a larger workforce and domestic market, and it can also mean more pressure on schools, clinics, land and jobs. The latest figure is 24.1 million, up from 23.5 million a year earlier, a rise of 0.53 million or 2.2%. That is the highest level since 2016, when the figure was 19.3 million, so the country sits at the top of its range over the whole window.
Why it matters. A population of 24.1 million growing at 2.2% a year means more children needing school places, more young adults looking for work and more households needing food, water and housing each year. Firms gain a larger pool of customers and workers. The state has to expand services and infrastructure just to keep the coverage it has now.
