In plain words
14.4 m people
What it is. Population is the estimated number of people living in Burundi at mid-year. Statisticians usually build it from a census count carried forward with assumptions about births, deaths and migration, so the figure is a model output between counts. It gives the size of the national headcount and leaves out age mix, where people live and how well they live.
Neither way is good in itself. A larger population can mean more workers and more domestic demand, and it can also mean more pressure on land, schools and clinics, so the direction carries no verdict by itself. The latest figure is 14.4 million for 2025, up from 14 million a year earlier, a rise of 0.34 million or 2.4%. Since 2016 the population has climbed from 11.2 million to 14.4 million. The current reading is the highest in that span.
Why it matters. A population growing at 2.4% a year adds a large cohort of people who need food, school places and health care, and later jobs. In a country where most households depend on small farms, each addition tends to shrink the land available per family. The state has to expand services every year just to keep coverage where it is, and firms gain a bigger pool of young workers and customers.
