In plain words

$0.69bn

What it is. Personal remittances received counts the money and goods that migrants and workers abroad send to people in Cameroon, plus pay earned in the country by non-resident workers. The figure comes from balance of payments records and is expressed in current US dollars, so price changes and exchange rates move it from year to year. Cash carried home by hand or passed through informal networks is largely absent from the total.

Higher is better. Higher is better because more inflows put more income into households and bring more foreign currency into the economy. The latest figure is $0.69bn for 2024, down from $0.79bn a year earlier, a fall of 12.3%. Since 2015 the lowest level was $0.24bn in 2015 and the highest was $0.79bn in 2023. The 2024 figure therefore sits well above the start of the period and below the 2023 peak.

Why it matters. Many Cameroonian households use money from relatives abroad to pay for food, school fees and medical care. A fall of $0.1bn in a year means less of that support reaches them. For the state and for firms, remittances are a source of foreign currency, so a smaller inflow leaves less of it available for imports.
