In plain words
3.9 births per woman
What it is. The fertility rate adds together the birth rates for each age group of women in a single year. The result is the number of children a woman would have if those rates held through her whole childbearing life. Because it uses one year's rates, it can shift when women delay or bring forward births, even if eventual family size stays the same. It counts births, and child survival and the number of children women wanted sit outside it.
Neither way is good in itself. A lower figure eases pressure on schools and health services, and a higher figure means a larger young workforce later, so each direction carries its own trade-offs. Liberia's latest figure, for 2024, is 3.9 births per woman, down from 4 births per woman a year earlier, a fall of 2.2%. Since 2015 the rate has ranged from 4.5 births per woman in 2015 to 3.9 in 2024. The latest reading is therefore the lowest of that span.
Why it matters. At 3.9 births per woman, a typical Liberian family is large, and the costs of food, schooling and health care are shared among many children. For the state, a young population means continued demand for classrooms, clinics and eventually jobs. If the rate keeps falling from its 2015 level of 4.5, that demand will grow more slowly.
