In plain words
4.1 births per woman
What it is. The fertility rate adds up the birth rates of women at each age in a single year. It gives the number of children an average woman would have if she lived through all her childbearing years at that year's rates. Because it uses one year's pattern, it moves when women delay or bring forward births. It leaves out child survival, migration and the spacing between births.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher rate brings faster population growth and more demand for schools and clinics. A lower rate slows growth and leaves fewer children for each working adult to support, though it also means an older population later on. Which suits a country depends on its stage of development and its goals. Togo's latest figure is 4.1 births per woman for 2024, down from 4.2 births per woman a year earlier, a fall of 0.07 births per woman. Since 2015 the rate has ranged from 4.7 births per woman in 2015 to 4.1 births per woman in 2024, so the latest reading is the lowest in that span.
Why it matters. At about 4.1 births per woman, many Togolese households still raise large families, which spreads income, food and school fees across more children. Each new generation is still bigger than the one before, so the state needs to keep adding classrooms, health workers and jobs for young people. The slow fall since 2015 eases some of that pressure.
