In plain words
5.1% of population
What it is. This measure counts the share of people living below a very low daily income line, with prices adjusted for purchasing power so that a dollar buys a comparable basket of goods in each country. The World Bank builds it from household surveys and fills the years between surveys by interpolation or extrapolation, so many yearly values are modelled estimates. It captures one money line for the whole population and leaves out health, schooling and how far below the line people fall.
Lower is better. A lower share is better because fewer people are living on an income that barely covers basic needs. The latest figure, for 2024, is 5.1% of population. That is the lowest reading since 2004. The highest in the same span was 31.4% of population in 2014, so the share sits at the bottom of its range and far below that peak.
Why it matters. At 5.1% of population, only a small minority of people in Comoros live below the line, compared with 31.4% of population in 2014. A person on so little each day has almost no room beyond food and other essentials, so a smaller share points to fewer households under that pressure. Because the figure is modelled between surveys, the next survey-based World Bank update for Comoros will show whether the 2024 level holds.
