In plain words
0.8% of exports
What it is. External debt service compares what a country pays each year on its foreign debt, covering both principal and interest, with what it earns abroad from exports of goods, services and primary income such as investment receipts. Because the denominator is export earnings, the ratio rises when repayments grow or when export revenue falls. It covers only external obligations and leaves out domestic debt, and it says nothing about the size of the debt stock itself.
Lower is better. A lower share means less of the foreign currency Algeria earns is committed to creditors, which leaves more for imports and reserves. The latest figure is 0.8% of exports for 2024, up from 0.76% of exports a year earlier, a rise of 0.04 percentage points. Since 2015 the range runs from a low of 0.43% of exports in 2022 to a high of 1.7% of exports in 2015. The current level sits closer to the bottom of that range than the top.
Why it matters. At 0.8% of exports, repayments on foreign debt take a very small part of Algeria's export income. For the state, that leaves most hydrocarbon and other export earnings available for imports and public spending. Households and firms are less exposed to pressure on foreign currency from creditors, though the ratio depends on export revenue staying firm.
