In plain words
28.9% of exports
What it is. External debt service shows how much of a country's foreign earnings goes on repaying debt. It adds up the interest and principal due and divides the total by income from exports of goods, services and primary income. Because export income is the denominator, the ratio moves with repayment schedules and also with the value of what Angola sells abroad. It says nothing about how much debt is outstanding or on what terms it was borrowed.
Lower is better. A lower ratio leaves more foreign income for imports and public spending after creditors are paid. In 2024 the figure was 28.9% of exports, down from 33.5% a year earlier. Since 2015 the lowest reading was 24.8% of exports in 2015 and the highest was 38.1% of exports in 2016. The latest figure therefore sits in the lower part of that range, nearer the low than the high.
Why it matters. With 28.9% of exports going to debt service, a large slice of Angola's foreign currency is committed before any imports are bought. Importers and the state compete for the rest, which matters for the cost of food, machinery and fuel. The ratio would rise quickly if export income fell while repayments stayed fixed.
