In plain words
24.7% of exports
What it is. This measure compares the foreign currency a country pays to creditors in principal and interest with what it earns abroad from exports of goods, services and primary income. Primary income covers items such as investment income and wages received from overseas. The ratio leaves out the size of the debt stock and government revenue, and one large repayment falling due can move it sharply in a single year.
Lower is better. A lower ratio is better because more of the country's export earnings stay available for imports, reserves and domestic spending. The latest figure for 2024 is 24.7% of exports, up from 20.1% of exports a year earlier, a rise of 4.7 percentage points. Since 2015 the ratio has ranged from a low of 6.4% of exports in 2015 to a high of 24.7% of exports in 2024. The latest reading is therefore the highest in that span.
Why it matters. At 24.7% of exports, roughly a quarter of what Côte d'Ivoire earns from selling abroad goes to servicing external debt. That leaves the government less room to absorb a fall in export prices or a rise in global interest rates. Firms and households feel it indirectly, since a state that spends more on creditors has less for public investment and a greater need to borrow again.
