In plain words
$58.7bn
What it is. External debt counts what an economy owes to lenders outside its borders, including government, state-backed and private borrowers, with all of it valued in current US dollars. It covers loans and bonds owed to foreign creditors and to institutions such as the IMF. Debt that Angolan lenders hold in kwanza falls outside it, and the figure is a gross stock, so foreign assets and reserves are not netted off. Because the total is converted to dollars, exchange rate moves change it even when no new borrowing takes place.
Lower is better. A lower stock means less owed to foreign creditors and a smaller claim on the dollars the country earns, which is why lower is better here. Angola's external debt was $58.7bn in 2024, up 2.5% from $57.3bn a year earlier. Since 2015 the range has run from a low of $48.8bn in 2015 to a high of $66bn in 2021. The latest figure sits above the bottom of that range and below the peak reached in 2021.
Why it matters. A stock of $58.7bn means a share of the dollars Angola earns, and of government revenue, goes to paying creditors abroad instead of funding services at home. Borrowers with dollar obligations carry more risk when the kwanza weakens, because each repayment then costs more local currency. The 2.5% rise over the last year adds to that repayment burden for the state and for firms with foreign loans.
