What it is. External debt counts what a country owes to creditors outside its borders, as a stock at one point in time. Here it is the total external debt stock for Comoros, taken from the World Bank's International Debt Statistics and valued in current US dollars. Because the figure is in dollars, exchange rate movements change it even when no new loan is signed. Debt owed to lenders inside the country is left out.
Lower is better. Lower is better because every dollar owed abroad has to be repaid from foreign currency earnings or from the budget. The latest figure, for 2024, is $0.39bn, up from $0.38bn a year earlier, a rise of 1%. Since 2015 the series has ranged from a low of $0.13bn in 2015 to a high of $0.39bn in 2024. The latest reading therefore sits at the top of its range for the period.
Why it matters. For a small economy like Comoros, a larger stock of foreign debt means more of the government's revenue and foreign exchange can be claimed by repayments to creditors abroad. That leaves less room for public spending at home and makes the state more exposed to dollar exchange rate swings. The 2024 level of $0.39bn is the highest recorded since 2015.
