What it is. External debt counts what a country owes to lenders outside its borders at a given date. It covers government borrowing and borrowing by other residents, valued in current US dollars from the World Bank's International Debt Statistics. Because the stock is expressed in dollars, new loans, repayments and exchange rate movements on debts held in other currencies all change it. Money the state owes to its own residents sits in a separate domestic debt measure.
Lower is better. A lower figure is better because less owed abroad means smaller repayments in foreign currency and less exposure to lenders' terms. Malawi's external debt stood at $3.7bn in 2024, up from $3.6bn a year earlier, a rise of 3.9%. That is an increase of $0.14bn in one year. Since 2015 the series has ranged from a low of $1.7bn in 2015 to a high of $3.7bn in 2024, so the latest reading sits at the top of its range.
Why it matters. Foreign debt has to be serviced in hard currency, so a stock at its highest since 2015 claims a larger share of the dollars Malawi earns and borrows. For the state, that leaves less foreign exchange for other priorities. For firms and households, it adds to competition for dollars that also pay for imports such as fuel and fertiliser.
