In plain words

$68bn

What it is. External debt is the total stock owed to lenders outside Morocco, expressed in current US dollars and compiled in the World Bank's International Debt Statistics. Because it is converted to dollars, movements in the dirham against the dollar change the reported figure even when borrowing stays the same. It covers what is owed abroad and leaves out debt held by domestic lenders, as well as the size of the economy and its capacity to repay.

Lower is better. A lower stock means smaller repayments in foreign currency and less dependence on overseas lenders, so a falling figure is good news. The latest figure is $68bn for 2024, down from $69.6bn a year earlier, a fall of $1.6bn or 2.4%. Since 2015 the range runs from a low of $44.6bn in 2015 to a high of $69.6bn in 2023. The 2024 figure therefore sits close to the top of that range, just below the peak set a year before.

Why it matters. Morocco owes foreign creditors $68bn, well above the $44.6bn of 2015. Interest and principal on that stock must be paid in foreign currency, which draws on the state's reserves and on the earnings of firms that borrowed abroad. The 2024 decline is the first step down from the 2023 peak, and the next annual figure will show whether it continues.
