In plain words

$69.8bn

What it is. This measure adds up what Mozambique owes to lenders outside the country, as a stock at one point in time, valued in current US dollars. The figures come from the World Bank's International Debt Statistics. Debt owed in other currencies is converted into dollars, so exchange rate movements change the total even when borrowing is unchanged. It leaves out domestic borrowing, such as bonds held by residents, and the income of the economy that services the debt.

Lower is better. A lower stock means smaller foreign-currency repayments to find from export earnings and government revenue, which is why a lower figure is better. The latest figure is $69.8bn for 2024, up from $67.9bn a year earlier, a rise of $1.8bn or 2.7%. Since 2015 the lowest level was $38.4bn, recorded in 2015, and the highest is the current $69.8bn. The latest reading therefore sits at the top of its range for the period.

Why it matters. Debt owed abroad has to be repaid in foreign currency, so a stock of $69.8bn is a large claim on the dollars that Mozambique earns from exports and collects through the state. The government has to cover those payments before it can spend on other priorities. The next annual reading will show whether the stock rises further above $69.8bn.
