In plain words
118.4 m people
What it is. This is the estimated number of people living in Egypt at the middle of the year, expressed in millions. Between censuses the figure is carried forward from earlier counts using assumptions about births, deaths and migration, so it is a modelled total. It gives one headline number and leaves out the age mix and where people live.
Neither way is good in itself. A larger population can mean a bigger workforce and home market, and it can also mean more pressure on housing, water and jobs. Which effect dominates depends on what the economy does with the extra people. The latest figure is 118.4 million for January 2025, up from 116.5 million a year earlier, a rise of 1.8 million or 1.6%. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of 101.6 million in January 2016 to 118.4 million now, so the latest reading is the highest in that span.
Why it matters. Growth of 1.8 million in a year means more school places, more homes and more jobs are needed across Egypt. For firms it adds customers and potential workers. For the state it raises the cost of keeping services and subsidies at the same level per person. The figure to check in future releases is whether job creation keeps pace with annual growth of 1.6%.
