In plain words
35.1 m people
What it is. Population counts everyone living in Ghana at the middle of the year, usually built from census results that are projected forward using birth, death and migration estimates. Between censuses the figure is a modelled estimate, so it can be revised when new counts arrive. It gives the size of the population but says nothing about age mix, where people live or how many are in work.
Neither way is good in itself. A larger population is neither good nor bad on its own, because the effect depends on whether jobs, schools, housing and public services grow alongside it. The latest figure is 35.1 million people, up from 34.4 million a year earlier, a rise of 1.8%. That is the highest point since 2016, when the figure was 29.4 million and the series was at its lowest in the window. No peer ranking is given for this measure.
Why it matters. A population of 35.1 million means the economy has to find work for a growing number of young job seekers and extend water, power, schooling and health care to more homes each year. For firms it is a larger home market and labour pool. For the state, an addition of 0.64 million people in one year widens the base of taxpayers and also the number of people relying on public spending.
