In plain words
7.5 m people
What it is. Population counts everyone living in Libya at the middle of the year, as an estimate rather than a census headcount. Estimates like this are usually built by projecting earlier counts forward with assumed birth, death and migration rates. Migration is the hardest part to pin down, and the figure carries all residents whatever their citizenship, so it includes migrant workers.
Neither way is good in itself. Neither a rising nor a falling population is good in itself for this measure. Growth adds workers and consumers but also needs more homes, schools and jobs, while a shrinking population brings the opposite pressures. The latest figure is 7.5 million people, up from 7.4 million a year earlier, a rise of 1.1%. That is the highest level since 2016, when the population stood at 6.6 million, so the country sits at the top of its range for the period.
Why it matters. A population of 7.5 million, growing by about 0.08 million people a year, means steady added demand for housing, health care, schooling and public services. For the state, each year brings more young people seeking work and more households to supply with power and water. For firms, the domestic market is small but expanding.
