In plain words
22.2 m people
What it is. Population counts everyone living in Malawi at the middle of the year, whatever their nationality or legal status. Estimates are usually built by projecting forward from the last census using birth, death and migration assumptions, so the figure is a modelled number that is revised when new survey or census data arrive. It gives a total only and says nothing about age mix, where people live or how many are in work.
Neither way is good in itself. A larger population is neither good nor bad on its own, because the same total can mean a growing workforce or growing pressure on services, depending on how the economy keeps pace. The latest figure is 22.2 million, up from 21.7 million a year earlier, a rise of 0.56 million or 2.6%. The population is at the top of its range since 2016, when it stood at 17.6 million. Growth has run in one direction across that whole span.
Why it matters. At 22.2 million, Malawi has more people to feed, school and employ each year, and a rise of 2.6% means schools, clinics and farmland are shared among a larger number of people every year. For firms it widens the pool of workers and customers. For the state, tax revenue and public services have to expand at least as fast as the population just to keep spending per person level.
