In plain words

27.9 m people

What it is. Population is the number of people living in Niger at mid-year. Between censuses the figure is a projection, built by carrying forward an earlier count with assumptions about births, deaths and migration. It gives the total only, so it says nothing about how many are children, how many live in towns, or how people are spread across the country.

Neither way is good in itself. A larger population means more workers and customers, and also more people to feed, school and house, so the direction carries no verdict of its own. The latest figure, for Jan 2025, is 27.9 million, up from 27 million a year earlier. That is a rise of 0.89 million people, or 3.3%. Since 2016 the low was 20.7 million, so the current level is the highest in that span.

Why it matters. Growth of 3.3% in a year means schools, clinics and water supplies must serve a larger number of people each year. Households share farmland and food with more mouths, and a growing number of young adults will look for work. Firms gain a bigger workforce and a larger market, and the state needs its revenue and services to keep pace.
