In plain words
8.8 m people
What it is. Population counts everyone living in Sierra Leone, expressed as a mid-year estimate in millions of people. Between censuses the figure rests on projections of births, deaths and migration, so it moves smoothly and gets revised when new survey or census evidence arrives. It gives the size of the country's people and says nothing about their age, where they live or how well they live.
Neither way is good in itself. A larger population can mean more workers, more customers and a bigger tax base, and it can also mean more demand for schools, clinics, housing and food. A smaller one would bring its own strains. The latest figure is 8.8 million people for 2025, up from 8.6 million a year earlier, a rise of 2.1%. Since 2016 the series has climbed from a low of 7.2 million, so the current reading is the highest in its range.
Why it matters. Adding 0.18 million people in a year means more children to enrol in school, more young adults looking for work and more households to feed and house. For firms it widens the pool of workers and buyers. For the state it raises the number of people that roads, health services and classrooms must reach each year.
