In plain words
8.6 m people
What it is. Population is the total number of people living in Togo at the middle of the year. It is an estimate for a single point in time, so it gives a headcount without the age mix, the split between town and countryside, or the pace of births and deaths behind the total. Between full censuses the yearly figures are modelled, so small year-to-year moves carry some uncertainty.
Neither way is good in itself. A larger population can mean more workers and customers, and it also means more demand for schools, homes, jobs and food. A smaller one brings its own pressures, so the direction carries no verdict until it is set against what the economy can absorb. The latest figure is 8.6 million for January 2025, up from 8.4 million a year earlier, a rise of 0.19 million or 2.2%. Since 2016 the population has ranged from a low of 7.2 million in January 2016 to a high of 8.6 million in January 2025, so the latest reading sits at the top of its range.
Why it matters. Growth of 2.2% in a year means about 0.19 million more people sharing Togo's land, jobs and public services. Households feel it in crowded classrooms, tighter housing and more competition for work. Firms gain a bigger pool of workers and buyers. The state has to extend schools, clinics, water and power to a larger population each year.
