In plain words
17 m people
What it is. This measure estimates how many people live in Zimbabwe at the middle of each year. It is a single national total, so the age mix, where people live and how many Zimbabweans have emigrated sit outside it. Because it is an estimate, each year's figure builds on earlier counts and assumptions about births, deaths and migration.
Neither way is good in itself. A larger population can mean more workers and customers, and it can also mean more pressure on schools, clinics, land and jobs, which is why the direction is neutral. The latest figure is 17 million people for 2025, up from 16.6 million a year earlier, a rise of 0.32 million or 1.9%. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of 14.6 million in 2016 to the current 17 million, so the latest reading sits at the top of its range.
Why it matters. Growth of 1.9% in a year means about 0.32 million more people needing food, housing, school places and work. Employers have a larger pool of potential workers and customers, but the economy has to create jobs at a matching pace. The state faces rising demand for classrooms, health services and water and power connections each year.
