In plain words

$2.4bn

What it is. Personal remittances received counts the money that people working abroad send to relatives and others in Ghana, converted into US dollars at current prices. Because it is not adjusted for inflation, a rise or fall reflects both the volume sent and the price level of the dollar. Money moved through informal channels such as cash carried home is likely to be only partly captured.

Higher is better. More money arriving from abroad means more household income and more foreign currency for the country, so a higher figure is better. The latest figure, for 2025, is 2.4 billion US dollars. A year earlier, in 2024, it was 3 billion, a fall of 20%. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 2 billion in 2021 to a high of 4.3 billion in 2020. The current level therefore sits much nearer the bottom of that range than the top.

Why it matters. Many Ghanaian households rely on transfers from relatives abroad to cover food, rent and school fees, so a drop of 0.6 billion dollars in a year means less money reaching those families. For the state and for firms that import goods, remittances are also a source of foreign currency, and a smaller inflow leaves less of it available.
