What it is. Remittance inflows add up the money that migrant workers and other households abroad send to families at home, plus other personal transfers, valued in current US dollars. For Lesotho the main source is the long-standing pattern of citizens working in South Africa, so the total follows that labour market and the rand-dollar exchange rate. Informal transfers carried by hand or through unrecorded channels sit outside the count, so the true flow is likely larger than the recorded one.
Higher is better. A higher figure means more foreign income reaching households and more foreign currency entering the economy, which is why higher is better here. The latest figure is $0.54bn for 2025, up from $0.48bn a year earlier, a rise of 12.4%. Since 2016 the lowest reading was $0.45bn in 2020 and the highest was $0.57bn in 2018. The current level therefore sits close to the top of its range, just below the 2018 peak.
Why it matters. Many Basotho households rely on money sent from relatives abroad to pay for food, school fees and housing, so a recovery of $0.06bn in a year matters at the household level. For the state, these inflows add to the foreign currency supply and support spending in local shops and services. Because the money depends largely on jobs in South Africa, any change in work opportunities there would reach Lesotho quickly.
