In plain words

$1.1bn

What it is. Personal remittances received counts money and goods that people working abroad send to households in Mali, together with pay earned by short-term workers abroad. It is measured in current US dollars, so price changes and exchange rates move the figure along with the actual flow. Transfers carried by hand or through informal agents are largely absent from the total.

Higher is better. Higher is better because more remittances mean more income reaching families and more foreign currency entering the economy. The latest figure is $1.1bn for 2024, up from $1bn a year earlier, a rise of 2.3%. Since 2015 the series has ranged from a low of $0.82bn in 2015 to a high of $1.1bn in 2021. The 2024 figure therefore sits at the top of that range, level with the 2021 peak.

Why it matters. For many Malian households, money from relatives abroad pays for food, school fees and medical bills. At $1.1bn a year, remittances are a large source of foreign currency for the country and help pay for imports. A rise of $0.02bn is small, so families and the state can expect the same level of support as a year earlier.
