In plain words

$0.29bn

What it is. Personal remittances received counts the money that people working abroad send to households at home, together with pay earned by residents who work for foreign employers. It is measured in current US dollars, so exchange-rate moves and dollar price changes are built into each yearly figure. Transfers sent through informal channels, such as cash carried by hand, are likely to be only partly captured.

Higher is better. More money arriving from abroad adds to household income and brings in foreign currency, which is why a higher figure is better. The latest figure, for 2024, is $0.29bn, down 9% from $0.32bn a year earlier. Since 2015 the series has ranged from a low of $0.19bn in 2016 to a high of $0.32bn in 2019. The 2024 figure sits in the upper part of that range, and a year earlier the series stood level with its 2019 peak.

Why it matters. For Mauritian households that receive support from relatives abroad, a smaller inflow means less money for everyday spending, school costs and housing. For the state and the banking system, remittances are one source of foreign currency, so a fall trims that supply slightly. The next annual figure will show whether the decline continues or the series returns to $0.32bn.
