In plain words
$0.1bn
What it is. Personal remittances received counts the money and goods that workers abroad send to households at home, plus pay that residents earn from foreign employers. Central banks build it from balance of payments reporting, so transfers through banks and money transfer firms are captured most fully. Cash carried across borders and informal channels tend to be undercounted. Because it is measured in current US dollars, swings in exchange rates and prices move the figure alongside the volume of money sent.
Higher is better. Higher is better here because more remittances mean more income reaching households and more foreign currency entering the country. Inflows to Namibia reached $0.1bn in 2024, up from $0.08bn a year earlier, a rise of 15.1%. Since 2015 the series has ranged from a low of $0.05bn in 2015 to a high of $0.1bn in 2024, so the latest reading sits at the top of its range for the window.
Why it matters. For Namibian households that receive these transfers, the money often goes towards everyday costs such as food, rent and school fees. The jump over the last year gives those families more room in their budgets. For the state and the banking system, $0.1bn is a modest but growing source of foreign currency.
