In plain words
$22.8bn
What it is. Personal remittances received adds up the money that Nigerians living abroad send to relatives at home, together with other transfers between households across borders. It is measured in current US dollars, so price changes are left in and the figure moves with the dollar's own purchasing power. Transfers carried by hand or sent through informal channels are hard to capture, so the recorded total is likely to sit below what actually arrives.
Higher is better. More money arriving from abroad means more household income and more foreign currency entering the economy, so a higher figure is better. The latest figure is 22.8 USD bn for 2025, up 0.66 billion, or 3%, from 22.1 billion in 2024. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of 17.2 billion in 2020 to a high of 24.3 billion in 2018. The latest reading therefore sits well above the 2020 low and a little under the 2018 peak.
Why it matters. Many Nigerian households use these transfers for food, rent, school fees and medical bills, so a level of 22.8 billion supports spending in families with relatives abroad. For the state and for firms that import goods, the inflow is a steady source of dollars. A rise of 3% in 2025 adds to that supply, and the series still has to climb a little further to match its 2018 high.
