In plain words

$0.01bn

What it is. Remittance inflows count the money that Sudanese people working abroad send to relatives at home, measured in current US dollars. The figure comes from balance of payments records of transfers received by households, so it reflects only what passes through channels that get recorded. Cash carried by hand or moved through informal agents usually falls outside it, which means the true flow can be larger than the published number.

Higher is better. Higher is better because remittances bring foreign currency straight to households and add to the dollars a country can use to pay for imports. The latest figure, for 2025, is $0.01bn, down from $0.02bn a year earlier, a fall of 47.6%. That is the lowest level since 2016 and the bottom of the range over that span. The peak was $1.5bn in 2022, so the current inflow is a small fraction of what it was three years before.

Why it matters. Many Sudanese families rely on money from relatives abroad to buy food, pay rent and cover medical costs, and a flow this small leaves them with far less to spend. Firms that import goods get fewer dollars from this source, and the state has less foreign currency coming into the economy. Recorded inflows of $0.01bn in 2025 leave households and the public finances with little cushion from this source.
