In plain words

$3.9bn

What it is. Personal remittances received counts the money that migrants and other workers abroad send to family and friends at home, plus the pay of temporary workers abroad and small transfers of assets. It is reported in current US dollars, so exchange rate swings and dollar prices affect the headline figure. Transfers sent through informal channels, such as cash carried home by hand, are only partly captured.

Higher is better. Higher is better for this measure because remittances bring in foreign currency that households spend or save and that the country can use to pay for imports. The latest figure, $3.9bn for 2025, is up from $3.3bn a year earlier, a rise of 19%. It is also the highest in the series since 2016, and well above the low of $1.7bn reached in 2018.

Why it matters. For Tunisian households with relatives abroad, these transfers help cover food, rent and school costs. For the state, $3.9bn of inflows adds to foreign currency reserves and eases some pressure on the dinar and on the import bill. Firms that sell to remittance-receiving households also benefit from the extra spending.
