In plain words
$2.8bn
What it is. Personal remittances received counts the money and goods that people working abroad send to households at home, together with wages earned by workers who live abroad only temporarily. It is measured in current US dollars, so price changes are not stripped out. Transfers carried by hand or through informal agents are hard to record and may sit outside the total.
Higher is better. Higher is better here because every extra dollar sent home adds to household income and to the foreign currency available in the economy. Uganda received $2.8bn in 2025, against $1.4bn a year earlier, a rise of 95.7%. That is the highest figure since 2016, the start of the window, and well above the low of $1.1bn in 2020.
Why it matters. For Ugandan households with relatives abroad, these transfers pay for food, rent, school fees and medical bills. For the state and for firms, a larger inflow of dollars adds to the foreign currency supply that importers draw on. Whether the 2025 level of $2.8bn holds in the next annual reading is the figure to check.
