In plain words
1.3% y/y
What it is. Population growth is the yearly percentage change in the total number of people living in Algeria. It combines births minus deaths with net migration, so one figure folds together family size, life expectancy and movement across borders. It says nothing about the age mix, where people live or how many of them are of working age.
Neither way is good in itself. Faster growth adds people who need homes, schooling and work, while slower growth means a population that ages sooner and a workforce that expands more slowly later. Which pace suits a country depends on its jobs, housing and public finances. The latest figure is 1.3% y/y for January 2025, down from 1.4% y/y a year earlier, a change of 0.08 percentage points. It is the lowest reading since 2016, and well below the 2.1% y/y of January 2016, the highest in that span.
Why it matters. At 1.3% y/y Algeria still adds people every year, so demand for housing and for jobs keeps rising, though more slowly than in 2016. Households face a smaller yearly increase in the number of new entrants to the labour market. For the state, planning for schools, health services and pensions rests on a population that is growing at its slowest pace since 2016.
