In plain words
69.2% of population
What it is. This measure counts the share of people whose daily consumption falls below the international extreme-poverty line, valued at 2021 purchasing power parity so that the line buys a comparable basket of goods across countries. The World Bank builds it from household surveys and fills the years between surveys by interpolation or extrapolation, so recent values are modelled estimates. A single money line shows how many people fall below it and leaves out how far below they sit, and it says nothing directly about health or schooling.
Lower is better. A lower share means fewer people are living on very little, which is why a falling line is the better outcome. The latest figure is 69.2% of population, for 2021. Since 1980 the series has ranged from a low of 55.3% of population in 2005 to a high of 83.1% of population in 1993. The 2021 figure sits close to the middle of that range, well short of the 1993 peak and above the 2005 low.
Why it matters. Around 69 per cent of people in Madagascar live below this line, so most households spend nearly all their income on basic needs and have little room to absorb a poor harvest or a price rise. Firms selling to the domestic market face customers with limited spending power. The state has a narrow tax base and a large population that depends on public support and aid.
