In plain words
60.5% of population
What it is. This measure counts the share of people in Niger living below a daily poverty line, with the line expressed in 2021 prices adjusted for purchasing power so that it covers a comparable basket of goods across countries. The World Bank models it from household surveys and fills the years between surveys by interpolation or extrapolation, so individual yearly values are estimates. Every person below the line counts equally, whether just under it or far below it, so the figure shows how widespread poverty is and leaves the depth of hardship out.
Lower is better. A lower share means fewer people whose spending cannot cover basic needs such as food and shelter. The latest figure is 60.5% of population, for 2021. Since 1992 the series has ranged from a high of 88.9% of population in 1994 to a low of 59% of population in 2018. The latest value sits close to the bottom of that range and far below the early peak.
Why it matters. A majority of Niger's people live below this line, so most household budgets go on food and other essentials, with little left for savings, schooling or health costs. Firms selling to consumers face weak spending power. The state has a narrow tax base and a large call on public support, especially in years of poor harvests.
