In plain words

97.2% net

What it is. Net enrolment counts children of official primary school age who are enrolled in primary school, divided by all children in that age group. Pupils outside the official age band are excluded from the numerator, which keeps late starters and repeaters out of the count. The ratio records who is on a school roll and leaves out attendance and learning.

Higher is better. A higher ratio means more of the age group is in a classroom, where children can acquire basic reading and arithmetic. The latest figure, for 2018, is 97.2% net, up 0.18 percentage points from 97% net a year earlier. Since 2005 the ratio has risen from a low of 81.9% net in 2005, and the 2018 reading is the highest in that span.

Why it matters. At 97.2% net, nearly every Beninese child of primary age is on a school roll. Households face little difficulty finding a place for a child at entry age. The state's main task is now to supply enough teachers and classrooms for a full age group and to keep those children in school through to the end of the cycle.
