In plain words
0.28 per 100 people
What it is. This measure counts subscriptions to internet service delivered to a fixed location such as a home or office, through fibre, cable or copper lines, and divides them by the population. It counts subscriptions, so one line shared by a whole household or workplace adds a single unit. Mobile data connections sit outside it, as does any internet use without a subscription of one's own.
Higher is better. A higher figure means more homes and businesses have a stable, high-capacity connection, so a rising number is good news for this measure. Benin's latest figure is 0.28 per 100 people in 2024, up from 0.17 a year earlier, a rise of 62.3%. Since 2015 the series has ranged from a low of 0.15 per 100 people in 2022 to a high of 0.64 per 100 people in 2015. The 2024 level is therefore close to the bottom of that range and well under half the 2015 high.
Why it matters. At 0.28 per 100 people, very few households in Benin have a fixed line at home, so activities that rely on a steady connection, such as remote work, online study or running a small business from home, reach only a small share of people. Firms and public services that want to deliver online therefore have a narrow base of fixed subscribers to serve. The next annual reading will show whether the 2024 rise continues.
