In plain words
0.02 per 100 people
What it is. This measure counts subscriptions to high-speed internet delivered over a fixed line, such as fibre, cable or DSL, and divides them by the population. A household or office line counts once however many people share it. Mobile broadband and public Wi-Fi are left out of the count.
Higher is better. More fixed lines mean more homes, schools and firms with a stable, fast connection, so a higher figure is better. Burundi's latest figure is 0.02 per 100 people in 2023, down from 0.03 per 100 people a year earlier, a fall of 32.3%. Since 2014 the series has stayed between 0.02 per 100 people in 2014 and 0.03 per 100 people in 2017. The 2023 figure sits at the bottom of that range, level with 2014.
Why it matters. At 0.02 per 100 people, fixed broadband reaches very few homes or offices in Burundi. Firms that need a steady connection for large files, video or online payments have little choice of supplier. Most internet use has to run over other networks, such as mobile. Public services that move online are likewise out of reach of a fixed connection for nearly everyone.
