In plain words
1.5 per 100 people
What it is. This measure counts fixed lines that carry broadband internet, such as DSL, cable, fibre and fixed wireless, and divides them by the population, so one subscription in a shared household or office counts once however many people use it. Because it counts subscriptions and not users, it understates access where people share a connection, and it leaves out mobile broadband entirely.
Higher is better. A higher figure means more of the population sits behind a fixed, usually faster and steadier, connection, which is why higher is better. The latest figure, for 2023, is 1.5 per 100 people, up from 1.4 a year earlier, a rise of 4.2%. Since 2014 the range runs from a low of 1.4 per 100 people in 2021 to a high of 2.4 per 100 people in 2018. The current level is therefore close to the bottom of that range and well below the 2018 peak.
Why it matters. At 1.5 per 100 people, fixed broadband reaches only a small share of Djibouti's households and firms, so most online activity depends on mobile connections. Businesses that need dependable high-speed links, such as those in trade and logistics, have a narrow base of fixed subscribers to draw on. The state faces the same limit when it tries to deliver services online.
