In plain words
0.09 per 100 people
What it is. This measure counts fixed broadband lines, such as fibre, cable, DSL and fixed wireless, that carry internet at broadband speeds, and divides them by the population. It counts subscriptions, so one household line shared by a whole family, or one office line serving many staff, appears as a single subscription. Mobile data plans are excluded, and in many countries they carry most internet use.
Higher is better. Higher is better because more fixed lines per person mean more homes, schools and businesses can rely on a stable, faster connection. Malawi stood at 0.09 per 100 people in 2024, up from 0.08 a year earlier, a rise of 8.6%. That is the highest figure since 2015, when it was 0.03, so the series has moved up across its whole span and sits at the top of its own range. Even so, the level is very small in absolute terms.
Why it matters. At 0.09 per 100 people, fixed broadband in Malawi reaches only a tiny fraction of households and organisations, so most people who go online do so on mobile phones. Firms, schools and offices that need steady uploads or video links depend on a few fixed connections, which are costly and concentrated in a small number of places. Growth from such a low base adds few lines in total, so the state's goal of wider access rests mainly on mobile networks for now.
