In plain words

19.4%

What it is. The lending interest rate is the rate banks charge private-sector borrowers for loans that usually run over the short and medium term. It is a single headline figure, so what an individual borrower pays depends on the loan's size, the borrower's risk and the bank's own funding costs. It describes the price of bank credit and leaves out finance raised outside the banking system.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher lending rate rewards banks and lenders and costs borrowers more, while a lower rate does the reverse, so neither direction is good in itself for this measure. The latest figure is 19.4% in January 2025, level with the 19.4% of a year earlier, a change of 0.03 percentage points. Since 2016 the rate has ranged from a low of 15.8% in January 2016 to a high of 20.7% in January 2018. The current level sits in the upper part of that range, closer to the 2018 peak than to the 2016 low.

Why it matters. Firms in Angola that borrow from banks for working capital or investment face credit costs near the top of what they have seen since 2016. Households taking loans meet the same pricing, which makes borrowing for large purchases expensive. Banks earn more on each loan at this level, and the state's own borrowing conditions are shaped by the same high cost of money.
