In plain words

8%

What it is. The lending interest rate is the price banks charge private sector borrowers for loans that cover short and medium term financing needs. It condenses many individual loans into one representative rate, so what a particular borrower pays depends on their credit standing, the collateral offered and the size of the loan. Fees, informal lending and credit outside the banks sit outside the figure.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher lending rate pays banks more for the risk they take and rewards savers, while a lower one makes credit cheaper for borrowers, so the direction carries no verdict on its own. The latest figure is 8% in January 2022, up from 7.9% a year earlier, a rise of 0.16 percentage points. Since 2013 the rate has ranged from a low of 7.9% in January 2021 to a high of 10.5% in January 2013. The current reading therefore sits just above the bottom of that range and well below where it started.

Why it matters. Businesses in Comoros that borrow for working capital or equipment face a rate close to the cheapest level recorded since 2013. Households taking bank loans face similar terms. The small rise over the last year leaves borrowing costs close to their lowest in the span, and the next January reading will show whether they keep edging up.
