24.3%
What it is. The lending interest rate is the rate commercial banks charge the private sector for short and medium-term loans. It is usually reported as an average across loan types, so individual borrowers can pay more or less depending on their credit standing, loan size and collateral. It follows the central bank's policy rate closely, and it leaves out fees, informal credit and the cheaper lending that goes to the state and favoured borrowers.
Neither way is good in itself. Because the measure is neutral, a high rate is not good or bad in itself. A high rate pays savers and helps hold down inflation, while a low rate makes borrowing cheaper for firms and households. The latest figure, 24.3% in 2024, is up from 17.8% a year earlier, a rise of 6.5 percentage points. It is the highest point since 2015, the start of the range, and the lowest was 9.4% in 2021. The rate is now well over twice its level at that low.
Why it matters. At 24.3%, a business loan costs far more to service than it did in 2021, so firms are likely to delay expansion and borrow only for essential working capital. Households face dearer credit for cars, homes and consumer purchases. The state also feels the effect, since higher market rates tend to raise what it pays on its own borrowing.
