What it is. The lending interest rate is the price banks charge private borrowers for short and medium-term finance, such as working capital or equipment loans. It condenses many individual loan contracts into one headline rate, so a particular borrower may pay more or less depending on risk, collateral and loan size. Fees and other charges that raise the true cost of a loan sit outside it.
Neither way is good in itself. A lower rate cheapens credit for borrowers but thins the margin banks earn for taking risk, while a higher rate pays lenders more and costs borrowers more. Each direction carries a benefit and a cost, which is why the page takes no side. Liberia's rate was 13% in January 2025, the same 13% as a year earlier, with a change of 0.05 percentage points. Since 2016 it has stayed between a low of 12.4% in 2019 and a high of 13.6% in 2016, so the latest figure sits in the upper half of a narrow band.
Why it matters. A Liberian business that borrows to buy stock or equipment faces an annual interest cost of about 13%, and that cost has barely moved over the last year. Firms can therefore plan repayments around a steady rate. Banks earn a consistent return on private lending, and households that borrow for small enterprises face the same level.
