What it is. Life expectancy at birth is the average number of years a newborn would live if the death rates at each age seen in a given year stayed fixed for life. Statisticians build it from a life table, which turns deaths per age group into a single summary. Infant and child deaths pull the average down sharply, so it responds strongly to progress in early-life survival. It is a national average, so differences between regions, sexes and income groups sit inside the one figure.
Higher is better. A higher figure means people are dying later, with fewer deaths in infancy, in working ages and in old age, so a rising number is good news. Algeria's latest reading is 76.5 years for 2024, up from 76.3 years a year earlier, a gain of 0.21 years. Since 2015 the lowest figure was 73.3 years in 2020, and the highest is the current 76.5 years. The latest figure therefore sits at the top of its range for the period, about three years above the 2020 low.
Why it matters. For households, a life expectancy of 76.5 years means planning for a long retirement, with savings and family support stretched over more years. For the state, a longer average life adds to the number of years pensions are paid and to the demand for care of chronic conditions. Employers and planners can expect a growing share of older people in the population if this level holds or rises.
